Eight immigrant rights organizations wrote a letter to the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Homeland Security and numerous other officials. The letter urges the authorities to release HIV-positive and LGBT+ immigrant detainees from the infamous Winn Correctional Center (WCC).

In the middle of the global COVID-19 pandemic WCC staff dismissed crucial precautions, claims the letter.

According to the obtained information, the center keeps 50 people in the same room with only one bathroom; sanitizing products are unavailable, and so is proper medical help for the detainees who already suffer from fever.

The LGBT+ and HIV-positive detainees face regular abuse from the WCC employees. Just a few examples from the letter include two trans women forced to shower with cisgender men, a gay man receiving homophobic threats from the staff and an HIV-positive man that has blood in his urine since he isn’t able to take his medication on time.

The letter is signed by advocacy groups such as Immigration Equality, Santa Fe Dreamers Project, Familia: Trans Queer Liberation Movement.
