Santiago Baten-Oxlag, 34, has died in Columbus, Georgia while in the custody of ICE. The man had been sent to the local medical facility from the private Stewart Detention Center in Alabama.

His death was officially set as complications linked to COVID-19, thus making him the ICE’s second prisoner to succumb to the virus. The first known one was the El Salvador native Carlos Mejía who had lived in America for several decades.

This information was submitted to Congress by ICE. Baten-Oxlag was waiting to be voluntarily transferred to Guatemala when he got sick. The notification also states that Baten-Oxlag was detained after a DUI arrest.
